Fertility Treatment

EDM number 686 in 1997-98, proposed by Ann Winterton on 22/01/1998.

That this House notes with deep concern the circumstances surrounding the birth of a baby to a 60-year old woman having received a course of in vitro fertilisation treatment at a London clinic; expresses concern that doctors and the London Gynaecology and Fertility Centre failed in their responsibility to check adequately their patient's medical records and confer with their patient's general practitioner; affirms the need for the child's welfare to be of paramount importance, including having both a father and a mother; and calls on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority to tighten guidelines controlling fertility clinics.
