That this House, recalling that the fiftieth anniversary of the modern Commonwealth is celebrated in 1999, salutes the achievements over those years of this unique organisation dedicated to helping its diverse membership of fifty-four countries to build powerful structures of civil society and to co-operate in the fields of trade and investment; looks forward to November, when the leaders of the Commonwealth states will gather in South Africa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting to prepare for the challenges of the new millennium; and gratefully acknowledges the work of the UK branch of the CPA in strengthening the links binding together the ever-widening family of parliamentarians dedicated to promoting parliamentary democracy and good governance within the Commonwealth.
