Fixing Of Car Prices In The UK
EDM number 862 in 1998-99, proposed by Lindsay Hoyle on 21/07/1999.
That this House notes the recent admission of Volvo car manufacturers that it has been supporting secret arrangements to fix its British car prices; believes that this constitutes a serious breach of UK law and a blatant disregard to the exploitation of UK customers; further notes that Volvo escaped penalties and was not even fined for this serious misconduct, with the Office of Fair Trading accepting a promise that this will not happen again in the future; believes that this will offer no deterrent to other car companies who also consider fixing prices; and calls upon the Government to increase the fines which can be imposed and to consider introducing mandatory prison sentences for directors of companies who are found to be operating a cartel and fixing prices in the UK.
This motion has been signed by a total of 50 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
