Children Of Asylum Seekers

EDM number 587 in 1999-00, proposed by Neil Gerrard on 30/03/2000.

That this House notes that under the provisions of Statutory Instrument No. 704 of 2000 among those items and expenses not to be treated as essential living needs of asylum-seekers are toys and other recreational items; notes that Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on Rights of the Child recognises the right of the child to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child; notes also that many children's organisations are now collecting toys to be given to the children of asylum-seekers; and urges all honourable Members to support the collections and themselves to donate a toy.

This motion has been signed by a total of 54 MPs.
