British Veterans Athletics Federation

EDM number 759 in 1999-00, proposed by Alan Keen on 18/05/2000.

That this House congratulates the British Veterans Athletics Federation on gaining 114 gold medals at the 13th World Veterans Track and Field Championships, held at Gateshead and South Tyneside between July 29th and August 8th 1999, in particular the four world records set by Stephen Peters (Men's Over 45, 200m), Rosemary Chimes (Women's Over 65 discus), Jenny Brown (Women's Over 40 Heptathlon) and the Women's Over 60, 4 by 400m relay team; commends the federation for having the foresight and ability, together with Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council and the South Tyneside Metropolitan Borough Council, to successfully bid to bring these championships to Great Britain and to provide such a memorable and well-organised athletics event for the 78 participating countries; and urges the Minister for Sport to support more plans to encourage more people of older age groups to participate in active sport as part of a healthy lifestyle.
