Refrigeration And Global Warming

EDM number 914 in 1999-00, proposed by Jonathan Shaw on 29/06/2000.

That this House welcomes the statement in Climate Change: Draft United Kingdom Programme, that the use of the powerful global warming gases, HFCs, is not a sustainable technology in the long term and that HFCs henceforth should be used only when safe, technically feasible, cost-effective and more environmentally acceptable alternatives do not exist; notes with pleasure that the Coca Cola company decided in June to move away from HFC cold drink equipment in order to make a significant impact on its contribution to the world wide movement to combat climate change; calls upon the Government to consider environmentally-benign procurement for refrigeration and air-conditioning in all departments and especially in the National Health Service; and requests the Government to consider incentives to encourage the phasing out of refrigerants with a high global warming potential.

This motion has been signed by a total of 44 MPs.
