Provision Of Treatment For Ex-Service Personnel Suffering From Psychological Injury
EDM number 189 in 2000-01, proposed by Ruth Kelly on 11/01/2001.
That this House acknowledges the courage and dedication of those past and serving members of Her Majesty's armed forces and recognises their invaluable contribution to United Nation's peacekeeping operations, to humanitarian operations, and in upholding human rights and the rule of law throughout the world; recognises the impact such experiences can have on the psychiatric well-being of servicemen and women and congratulates the Ex-Services Mental Welfare Society (COMBAT STRESS) for the assistance the Society provides to ex-servicemen and women from psychological injury; but notes with concern the increasing number of cases of ex-service personnel who are suffering from psychological injury, including post-traumatic stress disorder; recognises the responsibility of the Government to ensure adequate services are available to these men and women to help their reintegration into civilian life; and calls upon the Government to undertake an inter-departmental investigation into the provision of funding of treatment given to these individuals so that all ex-servicemen and women have access to assistance if required.
