Cardiff Capital Of Culture 2008

EDM number 1177 in 2001-02, proposed by Julie Morgan on 23/04/2002.

That this House wholeheartedly welcomes the bid of the City of Cardiff to become European Capital of Culture in 2008, and wishes the organisers every success with this bid; applauds the aim of Cardiff 2008 to highlight the cultural heritage and traditions of the Welsh capital and the whole of Wales; further welcomes the inclusive nature of the bid, which also celebrates the diversity and multi-culturalism of contemporary Welsh life, showcasing the wealth of talent currently on display in Welsh sport, music, drama, art and architecture; further welcomes and encourages the emphasis placed on the special bilingual nature of Wales and the world-renowned literacy tradition of the country; recognises the benefit to the whole of Wales that a successful bid would bring in terms of employment, tourism and transport; notes the strong support given to the bid from all over Wales and beyond; and believes that Cardiff is in an excellent position to claim the title of European Capital of Culture for 2008.
