Iraq And The Prime Minister
EDM number 1238 in 2001-02, proposed by Alex Salmond on 07/05/2002.
That this House notes with concern reports of Pentagon sources briefing that the United States is planning a massive air-led military campaign against Iraq of up to 1,000 bombing strikes a day, followed by a ground invasion involving at least one United Kingdom army brigade, and that plants producing so-called smart bombs are currently working overtime in preparation for a military campaign in the autumn or next spring as reported in the Herald on 29th April; further notes the remarks of the Prime Minister in the House on 10th April in relation to Iraq that 'no decisions on action have been taken'; believes that these positions are mutually inconsistent; calls on the Prime Minister to make a full statement to the House outlining preparations for an attack on Iraq; and reiterates that any offensive military action against Iraq can only be morally justified if it carries a new and specific mandate from the United Nations Security Council.
