EDM number 1573 in 2001-02, proposed by Andrew Dismore on 05/07/2002.

That this House recognises that the victory of the opposition Republican Turkish Party in the municipal elections in northern Cyprus, on Sunday 30th June, in the main towns of Nicosia, Kyrenia and Famagusta and the increase in their vote reflects genuine Turkish Cypriot support for the election slogan 'solution for the Cyprus problem and accession to the European Union'; congratulates all the opposition forces in the Turkish Cypriot community, especially the Republican Turkish Party, the Communal Liberation Party, the Patriotic Unity Movement, the 41 organisation 'This Country is Ours' platform and the Africa newspaper, for asserting the rights of the Turkish Cypriots for a solution and entry to the European Union alongside their Greek Cypriot compatriots; welcomes the visit of Izzet Izcan and Ozker Ozgur, leading Turkish Cypriot politicians of the Patriotic Unity Movement, to London following the postponement of the military trial against them and journalists on the Afrika newspaper and their briefing meetings with members of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities in London; and, at the time of the 28th anniversaries of the Junta Coup and Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, pledges support for all those trying to ensure a Cyprus settlement this year.
