National Asylum Support Service
EDM number 735 in 2001-02, proposed by HELEN CLARK on 28/01/2002.
That this House expresses its extreme concern at the failure of the National Asylum Support Service to learn from its acknowledged mistakes over the past year and improve the quality of its mode of operation; calls attention in particular to its lack of forward planning and consultation with local authorities to whose areas asylum seekers have been dispersed; and calls on the Government to undertake an urgent appraisal of the structure and functioning of NASS and the extent to which the policy and practice of dispersal of asylum seekers through NASS is causing serious problems for local social, education and health services and hostility in the recipient communities against asylum seekers themselves.
