Racial Segregation In 21st Century America
EDM number 1178 in 2002-03, proposed by Ashok Kumar on 12/05/2003.
That this House is shocked to note that in 2003 it is deemed acceptable for schools in the US to hold whites only events, separating children who have been educated together since kindergarden; recalls the landmark judgement of the US Supreme Court in 1954 ruling that the provision of separate but equal facilities was unconstitutional; is proud of the fact that such an overtly racist event would not be permitted by a UK state school; further notes that such segregation, at a time when US officials are engaged in advising on the establishment of a democratic, representative and unbiased framework in Iraq, appears perverse; and urges the Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and other members of the UK Government to raise this matter and make their concerns known when next they meet with representatives of the US Administration.
