Odours In South Essex

EDM number 1229 in 2002-03, proposed by Bob Spink on 15/05/2003.

That this House deplores the bad smells that are described by the Environment Agency as 'extremely pungent ... nauseating and unpleasant' that have pervaded South Essex for three months, are getting worse, and include sulphurous gases; recognises the serious anxiety caused to residents and the breathing difficulties, sickness and loss of sleep they cause; congratulates the Yellow Advertiser on its campaign, Stop the Smells; notes that the Environment Agency stated on 14th May in a fax to the honourable Member for Castle Point that the Leachate lagoon is the predominant source of odour and that a number of further measures are being evaluated today by Cleanaway Ltd; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to instruct the Environment Agency immediately to implement legal action against those responsible for the smells and to pursue that action as forcefully and quickly as possible, seeking maximum financial penalties and to give details of the measures being evaluated or applied to resolve the problem and to give a full account to the public short and long-term possible health and quality of life consequences of the smells.

This motion has been signed by a total of 7 MPs.
