Hiv/aids And Children

EDM number 1521 in 2002-03, proposed by Caroline Spelman on 02/07/2003.

That this House calls attention to the UN World Population Day on 11th July; highlights the importance of reproductive health issues, particularly HIV/AIDS and its effect on world poverty; notes that Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the hardest hit regions, containing three quarters of the world's HIV/AIDS population and nine out of 10 African children live with HIV/AIDS; further notes that 11 million of the 14 million children under the age of 15 have been orphaned by the disease; applauds non-governmental organisations and international bodies for their work on the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS; calls upon the work of ACHAP in Botswana to be used as an example of good practice; acknowledges the urgent need for a comprehensive and integrated response to the longer-term impact of HIV/AIDS, particularly with orphans and child-headed households; and calls for the Government to do more towards tackling these worrying trends.

This motion has been signed by a total of 52 MPs.
