China And Tibet

EDM number 1060 in 2003-04, proposed by Kate Hoey on 27/04/2004.

That this House welcomes the visits to the United Kingdom during May of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and, in recognition of this being the centenary year of Britain's invasion of Tibet and in further recognition of the special relationship between the two nations, calls on the Prime Minister to secure from Wen Jiabao an undertaking to drop all pre-conditions to negotiating a settlement on Tibet with representatives of the Dalai Lama and to make a public statement of his support for the Dalai Lama's non-violent approach and his concern about the situation of Tibet, including a fair retrial according to international standards for respected Tibetan Buddhist leader Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche, who remains under sentence of death, and to release all political prisoners in Tibet including the 15-year old Panchen Lama.

This motion has been signed by a total of 78 MPs.
