Recycling Of Domestic Batteries
EDM number 1185 in 2003-04, proposed by Rob Marris on 13/05/2004.
That this House is disappointed to note that, whereas 25,100 tonnes of domestic-type batteries were sold in the UK in 2002, only 125 tonnes were collected for recycling in that year, a collection rate of only 0.5 per cent., and that of that 125 tonnes, a mere five tonnes were recycled in the UK itself, with the rest being sent abroad for recycling; and urges the Government to hasten its discussions with stakeholders regarding the setting up of UK recycling capacity for the zinc carbon and alkali manganese batteries commonly found in portable radios and children's toys.
