Abandoned Vehicles

EDM number 632 in 2003-04, proposed by Theresa May on 12/02/2004.

That this House notes that 293,000 abandoned cars were removed by local authorities in England in 2001-02, a 31 per cent. increase from 2000-01 and that the cost to the taxpayer has risen from ú12 million to ú15 million; further notes that 22,700 of these cars were set alight in 2001-02, causing serious environmental hazards; notes with concern the possible increase in abandoned cars under the End of Life Vehicle Directive and that industry estimates indicate that this increase could be over 340,000 per year; and calls on the Government to take action to ensure that abandoning cars is not the easiest option for car disposal.

This motion has been signed by a total of 57 MPs.
