Tax Credits
EDM number 69 in 2003-04, proposed by David Willetts on 26/11/2003.
That this House is alarmed at the growing crisis in the administration of the Government's tax credit schemes; notes that the Comptroller and Auditor General has expressed his 'serious concern' at the overpayment of working families' and disabled persons's tax credit, which may amount to more than ú2 billion; is concerned at reports that as a result up to 200,000 low income families may be forced to repay some of the tax credit they have received; fears that these problems will get worse given the chaos surrounding the introduction of the working tax and child tax credits; and wonders how the taxpayer can have any confidence that their money is being properly administered when, as a result of the tax credits fiasco, the Inland Revenue has had its own accounts qualified by the National Audit Office.
