Factory Closures In The Texile Industry

EDM number 1026 in 2004-05, proposed by Tom Levitt on 05/04/2005.

That this House notes that there has been a series of takeovers of small companies in the textile industry recently which has led directly to closure of established industries, many redundancies and the appearance of asset-stripping, not least in the cases of Huddersfield Fine Worsted, Globe Worsted of Huddersfield and Dorma/Kaleidoscope Colouration in Chinley, High Peak; further notes that the closures have been carried out in a way which obliges the taxpayer rather than the company to meet redundancy costs; notes connections and similarities between the various closures; and requests the Department of Trade and Industry to carry out a thorough investigation of the organisations and individuals involved in this systematic betrayal of loyal working people.

This motion has been signed by a total of 13 MPs.
