Arms Embargo In China (No. 2)
EDM number 891 in 2004-05, proposed by Greg Pope on 10/03/2005.
That this House notes that the Government of the People's Republic of China is likely to enact legislation that would automatically trigger military action against Taiwan if the island moves towards independence; further notes that last year France granted export licences valued at 171 million euros to China, the highest of any EU member; believes that France is likely to be the greatest beneficiary of the lifting of the embargo; further believes that the lifting of the EU arms embargo is not warranted by China's appalling human rights record, and is not in our national interest; and calls on the UK Government to oppose the lifting of the EU arms embargo to China.
