Post Office And Bank Branch Closures In East Dunbartonshire

EDM number 145 in 2005-06, proposed by Jo Swinson on 19/05/2005.

That this House notes with concern the announcement by National Australia Bank that up to 100 Clydesdale and Yorkshire bank branches across the north of England and Scotland are set to close; further notes that in Bishopbriggs, Bearsden, Milngavie and Kirkintilloch in East Dunbartonshire, local businesses and older people rely on local branches for banking services; further notes that, combined with the closure of local post offices in Kessington, Killermont, Auchinairn, Courthill and Westerton, the vitality of town centres is increasingly under threat; and calls on the Government to accept the essential and continuing need for financial services to be provided throughout rural areas to prevent the disintegration of the local economy and the decimation of local high streets.
