Unesco/cuba Literacy Award

EDM number 2517 in 2005-06, proposed by Colin Burgon on 05/07/2006.

That this House congratulates the government of Cuba for receiving the 2006 UNESCO Rey Sejong Literacy Prize for its Latin American and Caribbean Educational Agency; recognises the value of free educational models that encompass literacy development in the family, community and schools; notes the huge contribution Cuba makes to other nations in the field of free healthcare provision, most notably through 25,000 doctors operating humanitarian missions in 68 countries; and calls upon the Department for International Development to generate coherent links with the Cuban government in these fields and in international disaster relief where Cuba also holds significant experience and expertise.

This motion has been signed by a total of 53 MPs.
