Real Nappies

EDM number 1400 in 2006-07, proposed by David Drew on 01/05/2007.

That this House congratulates all those involved in Real Nappy Week 2007, particularly the Women's Environmental Network, the Waste Resources and Action Programme and the Nappy Alliance; notes the successful events and activities which took place across the UK as part of an ongoing campaign to encourage the use of reusable nappies both by new parents and on NHS maternity wards; acknowledges that the Environment Agency has estimated that the decomposition timescale for some of the materials and chemicals currently used in disposable nappies is more than 500 years; notes with concern the spiralling costs to local authorities of dealing with the three billion disposable nappies being thrown away each year and to individual NHS trusts of disposing of nappies as clinical or other waste; and calls for determined action by Ministers to address the serious waste-related problems and the substantial cost to local government and to the National Health Service resulting from the use and promotion of disposable nappies.

This motion has been signed by a total of 50 MPs.
