Dangerous Furniture

EDM number 400 in 2006-07, proposed by Madeleine Moon on 05/12/2006.

That this House joins the Trading Standards Institute in calling on the Government to hold talks with the Polish Embassy to stop lethal furniture flooding into the UK; recognises that much needs to be done to educate the public that sofas entering the UK from Poland and often sold for as little as £300 may not meet UK legislation requiring them to be made of material that resists fire, despite displaying swing tags showing a lighted match and cigarette; and notes the danger posed by furniture such as the consignment from Poland recently seized by trading standards officers, which burnt in seconds of contact with a naked flame and just minutes later became a blazing inferno emitting toxic smoke and fumes.

This motion has been signed by a total of 57 MPs.
