Staveley Leisure Centre

EDM number 1629 in 2007-08, proposed by Paul Holmes on 21/05/2008.
Categorised under the topics of Leisure, Local government and Sports.

That this House congratulates Liberal Democrat-run Chesterfield Borough Council on building, to budget and to schedule, a state of the art £8 million Healthy Living Centre in Staveley, one of the poorest areas of Chesterfield, to replace the old, crumbling and dangerous leisure centre which had to be closed due to mining subsidence and which the previous Labour-run council had failed for seven years to raise the money to replace; notes that the Government and Sports England failed to provide a single penny towards the new centre which had to be entirely funded by Chesterfield Borough Council; and futher notes with regret that the Government's Olympic smash and grab raid on Sports England means that every constituency in the country will lose close to £1 million that should be going into grass roots sporting activity.

This motion has been signed by a total of 44 MPs.
