That this House welcomes the cross party consensus supporting the case for high speed rail; believes that the medium- and long-term economic and environmental advantages of high speed rail have been well established; calls on the Government to ensure that high speed rail will not fall victim to the need to reduce the budget deficit; and further calls on the Government to set out a timetable to ensure the start of construction of high speed rail at the earliest possible opportunity.
