Commemoration Of The First World War

EDM number 614 in 2012-13, proposed by Jonathan Edwards on 22/10/2012.
Categorised under the topics of Cultural heritage and Military operations.

That this House notes that during the conference recess the Prime Minister announced that 50 million had been allocated to commemorate the beginning of the First World War; further notes that an estimated 10 million soldiers died during the conflict with 21 million injured; further notes that there were an estimatedone million direct civilian deaths as a result of the war andsix million via famine and disease; further notes that the war is recalled for its unimaginable human destruction and suffering; recognises that the cause of the war was the imperialistic foreign policy of the powers of the day; and believes that this House should recognise the loss and pain suffered by the victims of the war and that it would be more appropriate to commemorate the end of the war rather than its beginning.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
