Opening Of The Shetland Gas Plant

EDM number 107 in 2016-17, proposed by Alistair Carmichael on 26/05/2016.
Categorised under the topic of Oil, petrol and natural gas.

That this House welcomes the inauguration of the Shetland Gas Plant at Sullom Voe in Shetland; congratulates Total UK, its partners Dong Energy and SSE, and its many contractors and subcontractors in completing the largest construction project in the UK since the 2012 Olympic Games; notes in particular the challenges of exploring for and extracting oil and gas in the waters off the west of Shetland in water depths much greater than those in the North Sea; acknowledges the role played by HM Treasury in constructing a fiscal arrangement allowing companies like Total UK to exploit resources to the west of Shetland; and thanks the people of Shetland for the contribution they have made to the UK economy as a result of their engagement with the oil and gas industry from the early 1970s, with the construction of the Sullom Voe Terminal beginning in 1975, its first oil being received in 1978, and its official opening by Her Majesty the Queen in 1981.
