Cyprus - Eu Accession
EDM number 1008 in 1997-98, proposed by Sydney Chapman on 12/03/1998.
That this House congratulates President Clerides of Cyprus on his re-election and welcomes him to Britain this week, wishing him well in his efforts to reunite the island and gain accession to the EU for the Republic of Cyprus; condemns attempts by Turkey to use the illegal occupation of Cyprus as a blocking tactic against the island's accession thus denying all of the citizens of Cyprus, in particular the Turkish Cypriot community, the benefits of membership of the EU; condemns the continued stalling and reluctance to progress in negotiations for the reunification of the island and implores Mr Denktash to act upon President Clerides' request to co-operate in talks aimed at bringing 24 years of division to an end with a solution which will guarantee the security of all citizens; calls for unhindered accession in the recognition of the fact that membership will ensure that the solution of the Cyprus problem will comply with the European legal order and the 'acquis communautaire', most notably with regard to the rights of freedom of movement, settlement and respect of human rights; and urges Her Majesty's Government to continue to promote a just and viable solution, to implement UN, Security Council and European Union resolutions on Cyprus and support the sovereignty and integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.
