Humanitarian Aid To Sudan

EDM number 1426 in 1997-98, proposed by David Amess on 11/06/1998.

That this House notes with horror the systematic murder of the Dinka people and the devastation of their crops, housing and cattle in the Bahr-El-Ghazal area of Sudan; expresses grave concern that these atrocities have been carried out by the Sudanese government's National Islamic Front forces and the government-backed mujahadeed and murahadeen; notes that this callous military offensive is the cause of widespread man-made famine resulting in the destitution of some two million people in four countries of Northern Sudan and took place from 3rd to 16th May, a time when the government of Sudan was being praised by the international community for giving permission for more airstrips to be used for the delivery of humanitarian aid to areas afflicted by famine; and urges the Government to use its position as president of the European Union to bring about renewed vigour amongst the European and international community to exercise all available pressure in demanding that the Sudanese government end its policy of genocide in Sudan.
