Lim Guan Eng
EDM number 1436 in 1997-98, proposed by Ann Clwyd on 16/06/1998.
That this House is deeply concerned about the sentencing of Lim Guan Eng, a prominent Malyasian opposition parliamentarian, to three years in prison for 'prompting disaffection with the administration of justice' and 'maliciously printing false information' after he criticised the Malaysian government's handling of allegations of statutory rape made against the former Chief Minister of Malacca; notes that the Malaysian government continues to use an array of restrictive legislation to deter people from expressing dissent; believes that the charges against Lim Guan Eng are politically motivated; calls on the UK Government to make representations to the Malaysian government in support of Lim Guan Eng's case; and calls on the Malaysian authorities to overturn Lim Guan Eng's conviction when his case comes up for final appeal.
This motion has been signed by a total of 42 MPs.
