Burma
EDM number 1625 in 1997-98, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 28/07/1998.
That this House notes that 8th August marks the 10th anniversary of the brutal suppression of Burma's pro-democracy uprising when thousands of peaceful prodemocracy demonstrators were killed by Burmese troops; notes also that since 1990 the regime has forced 112 MPs from office, jailed 78 MPs, forced 20 opposition MPs into exile, banned 83 political parties, routinely harasses and intimidates NLD MPs and that NLD leader, Nobel Peace laureate Aung Sang Suu Kyi, remains under house arrest; recognises that all attempts at constructive engagement have failed to persuade the Burmese regime to introduce democratic reforms; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to heed Aung Sang Suu Kyi's plea to the international community to impose full economic sanctions on Burma and to work with other governments and collectively implement investment sanctions on Burma.
This motion has been signed by a total of 55 MPs.
