CHILDREN'S RIGHTS COMMISSIONER

EDM number 790 in 1998-99, proposed by Hilton Dawson on 06/07/1999.

That this House supports the proposal to establish a Children's Rights Commissioner in England, with linked officers in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland; recognises that the powers and duties of such an officer would be to promote children's rights and interests and ensure they are taken into account by ministers, local authorities, private and voluntary bodies, to promote compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child; and to ensure that children have effective ways of raising their concerns and problems; and commends the use of Committee Room 6 on Wednesday 14th July for a meeting to enable all honourable Members to discuss the implications of the Children's Rights Commission Bill introduced earlier that afternoon.

This motion has been signed by a total of 55 MPs.
