EDM number 798 in 1998-99, proposed by Andrew Love on 07/07/1999.
That this House congratulates the Government on the introduction of a ban, with effect from October, on the sale of gas lighter refills to under 18s; notes that recent research by St George's Medical Hospital School has shown that in 1997 73 people died from solvent abuse, 56 per cent. of whom died after using cigarette lighter refills; further notes that this accounts for one in 50 of all deaths among teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19; and urges the Government to take further steps to educate young people about the dangers of solvent abuse.
