Cyprus (No. 2)

EDM number 1008 in 1999-00, proposed by Andrew Dismore on 20/07/2000.

That this House welcomes the United Nations-sponsored talks in Geneva on 24th July to 4th August, and in New York from 12th September to early October; welcomes the opportunity that Greek and Turkish Cypriots have taken to establish meetings between civil society groups on the island; is alarmed by reports of intervention by the Turkish military commander on the island in the April elections for the unrecognised regime in Northern Cyprus; condemns the arrests and legal action taken against Turkish opposition politicians and journalists, including Sener Levent, the Editor of the Avrupa (Europe) newspaper, accused of spying for Greek Cypriots, and Ozker Ozgur of the Patriotic Unity Movement and a former Deputy Prime Minister of the unrecognised North Cyprus regime who is charged with sedition and whose trial is to commence on 24th July; recognises the historic nature of the event on 18th July when 10,000 Turkish Cypriots gathered in North Nicosia to demand that Turkey gives us back our country; in support of Mr Levent; and urges all three guarantor powers to support those on the island working for a peaceful outcome, based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal solution in accordance with United Nations resolutions in the interests of both communities on the island.

This motion has been signed by a total of 30 MPs.
