EDM number 1179 in 1999-00, proposed by Bob Russell on 27/11/2000.
That this House congratulates all involved in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award; acknowledges that since the award's inception in 1956 more than three million young people between the ages of 14 and 25 years have participated, and welcomes the fact that around 100,000 join every year; recognises that the award provides an opportunity for people from all backgrounds to take part on equal terms in meeting the challenges of modern times with an enjoyable, demanding and rewarding programme of personal development of the highest quality; pays tribute to His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh for his commitment over the past 44 years and, whilst noting it was announced at the Award's General Council meeting on 21 November that His Royal Highness is to step down next year as Chair of the Trustees, is delighted that he continues as Patron of the Award; and look forward to increasing numbers of young people participating in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in the years ahead.
