Justice For Land Settlement Tenants

EDM number 167 in 1999-00, proposed by Nicholas Lyell on 08/12/1999.

That this House notes with dismay the continuing ordeal of former tenants of the Land Settlement Association in relation to claims by the Inland Revenue for tax on compensation received by them as a result of the settlement of their litigation with the Ministry of Agriculture over the gross mismanagement of the Land Settlement Association scheme, which condemned them for many years and, in some cases, to decades to a life of servitude, distress and anxiety; and calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Paymaster General, together with the Head of the Inland Revenue, to meet honourable Members whose constituents have suffered in this way and whose damages were understood at the time by the then Minister of Agriculture not to be susceptible to tax, in order to identify and seek to establish a fair outcome to this long and shameful saga.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
