Conservation And The Rights Of Local People In Africa
EDM number 446 in 1999-00, proposed by Andrew George on 29/02/2000.
That this House notes with concern the displacement of some indigenous and other local peoples from their lands in Africa and that this has also occurred in some locations of UK Government and NGO-funded conservation initiatives; further notes that mining, tourism, poaching, hunting and some commercial farming practices pose a greater threat to wildlife and environment than do the local populations of these areas; supports the rights and needs of local populations such as those of the Masai people in Tanzania and Kenya; and recognises that for conservation to be successful, local populations must be fully involved in its planning and implementation and must have the opportunity of a share in the financial and other benefits which result.
