Science And Innovation In The UK

That this House notes that drug companies in the United Kingdom employ over 20,000 research staff and invest ú2.5 billion per year in research and development; recognises that six of the world's top 25 medicines were developed in the UK; further notes that UK pharmaceutical exports total around ú6 billion a year; congratulates Lilly UK on receiving the Queen's Awards for Enterprise 2000 in recognition of the valuable contribution which its modern atypical antipsychotic drug, discovered in the UK, makes to the treatment of almost six million schizophrenia patients worldwide; welcomes the plans by Lilly UK to double the number of research scientists it employs in the UK; and calls on the Government to do all it can to ensure that the UK remains a world leader in science and innovation.
