Planning Control For Non-Listed Buildings
EDM number 1178 in 2001-02, proposed by Tony Lloyd on 23/04/2002.
That this House notes with concern that current planning legislation allows non-listed buildings of distinctive architectural style to be destroyed without prior public notice or consultation; regrets the demolition of the Grove Public House in Whalley Range, Manchester, a well-known landmark typical of the architecture in the area, which took place without prior consultation with local residents or the local authority; believes this exposes a serious gap in the protection of the local communities under present planning laws; and calls on the Government to strengthen planning law by providing proper consultation mechanisms for non-listed buildings so that both local residents and the local authority are consulted before demoliton can take place.
