Self-Care
EDM number 1332 in 2001-02, proposed by HELEN CLARK on 16/05/2002.
That this House welcomes the conclusion in Derek Wanless's final report to the Treasury, Securing our Future Health: taking a long-term view, that both additional resources and radical reform are necessary; applauds his acknowledgement that 'there is more scope for self-care'; does not regard self-care as a means of rationing medical care but believes that NHS Direct, walk-in centres, telemedicine, reclassification of prescription-only medicines to pharmacy sale and access to medicines in community pharmacies should be co-ordinated within a strategy to encourage greater self-care; and calls upon the Government to introduce self-care into both the training and education of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and the national curriculum and to empower the public and health care professionals to deliver the long-term view for this behavioural change.
