Campaign On The Environment
EDM number 1588 in 2001-02, proposed by Malcolm Bruce on 08/07/2002.
That this House notes with concern that the UK remains at the bottom of the European league table on the environment, particularly when just 11 per cent. of household waste is recycled or composted; notes how this contrasts with results of a recent MORI survey which shows that a slim majority of people, 54 per cent., are motivated to be greener by 'doing their bit' for the environment; notes with concern that the Government's 'doing your bit' campaign has been dormant in 2002, particularly in light of the forthcoming Earth Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in August of this year, which should be encouraging us all to 'think globally, act locally'; notes the importance and duty we will have, from the individual to national level, 'to do out bit'; urges Parliament and all government departments to 'do their bit' by increasing recycling of waste, use recycled materials, reduce energy use and sign up to renewable energy supplies; and calls on the Government to reinvigorate and strengthen the 'doing your bit' campaign to ensure an increased public awareness and action on the environment.
