Human Rights And Democracy In Malawi

EDM number 1846 in 2001-02, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 31/10/2002.

That this House notes with concern the serious deterioration of human rights and democracy in Malawi; further notes the ruling party's insistence on extending the presidential term limit despite criticism from church leaders, human rights organisations and the Malawi Law Society, as well as the violence and intimidation directed at the Opposition, the clergy and the media; calls for Her Majesty's Government to press the Malawian authorities to desist from extending the presidential term limit and ensure that the constitution of the country is upheld and that members of the Opposition are treated in accordance with international and regional human rights standards, and furthermore that the Opposition is allowed equal access to public media and broadcasting services such as the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation and Television Malawi.

This motion has been signed by a total of 32 MPs.
