Protest By Exiled Chagos Islanders

EDM number 380 in 2001-02, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 07/11/2001.

That this House notes with concern the recent protest outside the British High Commission in Mauritius by hundreds of exiled Chagos Islanders and the protestors' declared intention to go on hunger strike until Her Majesty's Government compensates them for their forced removal from their homelands between 1965 and 1973 to make way for a US military base on Diego Garcia; further notes the judgement handed down in the High Court in London last year in which the removal was declared illegal and the difficult conditions in which the Chagos Islanders are currently living in Mauritius; and urges her Majesty's Government to take concrete measures to ensure that the legitimate grievances of the thousands of Chagos Islanders and their descendants are satisfactorily addressed at the earliest opportunity.

This motion has been signed by a total of 42 MPs.
