Peace, Justice And Development In Sudan

EDM number 462 in 2001-02, proposed by Hilton Dawson on 21/11/2001.

That this House remains deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Sudan; deplores the human rights abuses committed against civilians in the context of that conflict, particularly the bombing of humanitarian operations by the government of Sudan; recognises the historical links between the United Kingdom and Sudan; notes the Prime Minister's stated belief that 'the state of Africa is a scar on the conscience of the world... if the world as a community focused on it, we would heal it'; and, in the light of this, calls upon the Government to renew its commitment to bringing about a peace settlement through the IGAD process, to maintain pressure upon the Sudanese government and other parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian and human rights law, to help provide development-oriented aid for health and education in Sudan's most poverty-striken areas, to support the introduction of UN human rights monitors, and to increase and to push for action at the EU level to ensure that the activities of European oil companies do not exacerbate the conflict.

This motion has been signed by a total of 59 MPs.
