Bereavement Allowance

EDM number 535 in 2001-02, proposed by Martyn Jones on 06/12/2001.

That this House urges the Government to amend legislation in respect of bereavement allowance to ensure that women do not suffer financial detriment following the recent equalisation of entitlement between men and women; calls on the Government to recognise in any such amendments the financial impact on women who have been widowed since 9th April, whose spouses had no opportunity to make alternative pensions provision prior to the replacement of widow's pension by bereavement allowance; believes that widows who have suffered financially since 9th April as a result of the changes should be reimbursed fully; and further calls on the Government to initiate an immediate review of the operation and level of payment of bereavement allowance.

This motion has been signed by a total of 53 MPs.
