UK Arms Export To India

EDM number 717 in 2001-02, proposed by Tony Baldry on 23/01/2002.

That this House expresses concern over Government support for BAe Systems arms trade with India; believes the proposed sale of 60 Hawk jets worth ú1 billion is beyond legitimate military needs; considers the export licence application departs from the EU's Criterion 4 and 8 to ensure regional stability and sustainability; notes ú1 billion is the same as 10 years of UK bilateral aid to India and could support the development of India's education, health and water sanitation systems; and calls on the Government to reconsider the need to incorporate sustainability in the Schedule and prior-scrutiny of such applications in the Export Control Bill to ensure that applications evoke the essence of Criterion 8 of the EU's consolidated and national export licence criteria.

This motion has been signed by a total of 65 MPs.
