Lymphoma
EDM number 97 in 2001-02, proposed by Ian Gibson on 10/07/2001.
That this House notes with concern that lymphoma, or cancer of the lymphatic system, currently affects approximately 4.5 million people worldwide and is a significant cause of death, killing an estimated 3000,000 people each year, that non-Hodgkins lymphoma is the third-fastest growing cancer world-wide, in terms of incidence and in numbers of deaths, and the seventh most common malignancy in the UK affecting approximately 20,000 patients in the UK, that the incidence of low grade follicular lymphoma is increasing at a range of 3 to 4 per cent. and that whilst effective management and palliative treatment can extend a patient's survival for a period of up to eight to 10 years, there is no cure for chronic, indolent lymphomas; and calls upon the Government to follow the example of the Lymphoma Association by raising the public and clinical profile of this terrible disease and of the need to ensure that innovative and effective treatment options are available on the NHS for all patients, according to their clinical need and to ensure NICE speeds up its review of the relevant drug treatment.
