National Depression Week

EDM number 1054 in 2002-03, proposed by Paul Marsden on 09/04/2003.

That this House welcomes the work of the Depression Alliance organising the National Depression Week which highlights the plight of the increasing numbers of children and teenagers who are affected by depression; notes that one in five children are reported needing help for depression during childhood; is concerned that reports indicate that 28 per cent. of young people have thought seriously about suicide; supports the Independent on Sunday's campaign for better treatment for those with mental health problems and congratulates their recent fundraising drive that raised 30,000 pounds for SANELINE, the charity's 24 hour helpline; urges the health ministers to increase the level of funding for treating children who are depressed; and supports the need for education ministers to increase support for teachers in sympathetically identifying vulnerable young people to give them additional support in schools.
