Sunsmart Skin Cancer Campaign
EDM number 1118 in 2002-03, proposed by HELEN CLARK on 30/04/2003.
That this House welcomes the new nationwide sun awareness campaign by Cancer Research UK and Government (SunSmart), aimed at reducing people's risk of skin cancer through awareness, prevention and sympton recognition; notes with concern that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK with 65,000 new cases every year and that malignant melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer, accounts for 1,600 deaths a year; further notes that skin cancer is a largely preventable disease and if detected early is usually treatable; and urges the Government to promote a long-term public health education programme on skin cancer designed to shift attitudes and behaviour towards sun exposure in the UK and increase the proportion of malignant melanomas detected early.
